HEVC playback explained

Do I need an HEVC extension?

Not always. HEVC Now can use playback capabilities already available to your browser and device, so the web player itself does not require you to install an HEVC browser extension.

For HEVC Now

Try the browser player first. If your browser and operating system can decode the file, it can play directly without installing a separate extension for this site.

For Windows desktop apps

Windows applications may rely on system media components. If you want HEVC playback throughout desktop software, you may need system-wide HEVC support or a suitable codec solution.

If the file still will not play

HEVC covers many profiles and bit depths, and containers can add another compatibility layer. A supported codec name does not guarantee that every HEVC file works in every player.

Convert for wider compatibility

If your goal is simply to make a particular video easier to play or share, converting it to H.264 + AAC MP4 is often the more portable option. HEVC Now can do this locally in the browser.
