HEVC / H.265 compatibility

HEVC browser support

HEVC playback in a web browser depends on more than the browser name. Operating-system codecs, device hardware, video profile and container can all affect whether an H.265 file plays.

Why HEVC support varies

Browsers do not all decode HEVC in exactly the same way. Some use media capabilities supplied by the operating system or device, while support can also depend on the HEVC profile, bit depth, resolution and container used by the file.

Chrome and Edge

Chromium-based browsers can play HEVC on some systems when the platform provides suitable decoding support. A file that works on one Windows or macOS device may therefore fail on another.

Safari

Safari has broad HEVC support on modern Apple platforms, particularly for media encoded in combinations supported by the operating system and hardware. Individual files can still fail because HEVC is a codec, not a guarantee that every container or profile is supported.

Firefox

Firefox HEVC behaviour depends strongly on the platform and available media components. The practical test is the file itself on the device you intend to use.

Test before installing anything

Use the HEVC Now player and built-in playback check first. If the browser cannot play the file reliably, the local converter can create a more widely compatible H.264 + AAC MP4 without uploading the video.
